Key Issues:

  • Commitment to Community

    • Provide responsible and experienced oversight of the implementation of the District’s Indoor Recreation Space Needs plan after several robust rounds of community engagement in 2024.

    • Continue expanding a diverse and inclusive range of programs that cater to people of all ages, abilities, and cultural backgrounds. Programs like Neuroflex Fitness and Bollywood Dance are just a few examples. Leslie is equally devoted to ensuring the park district maintains a strong presence at key community events, including Halal Fest and Juneteenth celebrations, further strengthening connections and celebrating the vibrant diversity of the community.

    • Build on the strong community support as received in the 2022 District community survey (highest satisfaction rates to date), in the 2023 City community survey (the vast majority of residents placed a high value on the quality and importance of parks and recreation), and during the 2024 Indoor Rec Space Needs Assessment surveys (strong showing of willingness to pay for additional amenities).

  • Affordability of Programs and Services

    • Staying committed to keeping program costs low while making fiscally responsible decisions in regards to tax payer funds.

    • Ensuring the district maintains their strong AAA bond rating which enables the district to secure favorable financing for vital future capital projects.

    • Continued strong support of the District’s Fee Assistance program, which has seen an increase in use in recent years

  • Environment and Sustainability

    • Continue the work to increase our green and sustainable practices, with projects like installing pervious pavers when feasible, improving our golf cart fleet with electric carts, and a commitment to invasive species removal and shoreline restoration projects.

    • Explore ways to increase the District’s use of solar power and other forms of renewable energy.

    • In 2024, the Board unanimously passed a Dark Skies resolution brought forth by Leslie, that not only conserves energy and reduces budget expenditures but also minimizes light pollution. This initiative helps to protect local wildlife habitats, fosters a healthier ecosystem, and improves the overall enjoyment of the natural environment for residents. By promoting sustainable lighting practices, Leslie's efforts contributed to a safer, more vibrant community while preserving the beauty of the night sky for future generations.
